This is the start of the Cub Lake trail. Cub Lake is a small but beautiful lake only 2.3 miles from here. The trail first crosses a marshy area where the Big Thompson River flows through Moraine Park. We travel through, across the end of one moraine (the stuff that Glaciers left behind) and along the South Lateral Moraine. Imagine this canyon filled with ice over almost a half a mile above you, and only 15,000 years ago.
We travel up Cub Creek where we pass a mixture of Willows, River Birch, and Alder along the creek. It's hard to recognize which, due to the lack of foliage during the Winter. We pass Beaver Ponds and stands of beautiful red-barked Ponderosa pines. We pass through Aspen groves, beautiful even without their foliage with the contrast of their white trunks to the evergreen pines and spruces that surround them.
Once we get to Cub Lake, we continue on around and meet our other trail at The Pool.#
